Product Description
BFD gives you your own drum studio, with complete control of 7 real drum kits plus additional hats, snares and cymbals. Every drum is recorded from eleven different mics positioned around the kit and room so you can mix your drums by blending the mic sources just like in a real studio. BFD's high quality drum sample library has an unparalleled degree of realism. For each type of drum type in each kit, there are a number of different styles of "hits". Each of these "hits" is sampled at up to 46 velocity layers, resulting in drum parts of superior detail and expressiveness.
BFD was recorded in the drum room at a top Californian recording studio by professional engineer Steve Duda (NIN, Pitchshifter, A Perfect Circle) using over $50,000 worth of microphones from Neumann, Sennheiser, AKG and others. The drums used range from the 1920s to 2002, and include both classics and rarities.
Not only useful as a sound source for your own drum programming, BFD also incorporates a comprehensive library of ready-to-use MIDI Grooves with different styles, feels and time signatures. The library features both programmed grooves and MIDI recordings of real drummers, including top UK session drummer Chris Dagley (Jamiroquai, Lalo Schifrin, Ella Fitzgerald, Eric Clapton, Chaka Khan).
The advanced, integrated Groove Librarian allows you to drag and drop the included grooves or import your own MIDI grooves. You can then trigger them in realtime from a keyboard or let the BFD freestyle with the auto-shuffle and auto-fill features.
BFD's humanization functions inject that elusive 'soul' into your drum parts. The integrated swing controls make it easy to tighten or relax the vibe as much as required. On top of this, the sound of the Groove can be further humanized through the controlled randomization of velocity and timing.
BFD is perfectly suited to rock, jazz, funk, country, hip-hop, blues, drum & bass. In fact, anything that may require a real drumkit, from auto-accompaniment, traditional song-writing and recording, to newer techniques such as creating original drum breaks.
Questions about the BFD
What does B.F.D. stand for?
Whatever you want it to :) - but it's certainly big and it's certainly drums.
Why no downloadable version?
B.F.D. has a large content library - 9Gb - and comes on a total of 2 DVDs. Clearly it is impractical for us to offer this as a download.
Do I have to install all the content?
No, you can pick and choose the components you want, and remove any you don't find useful from your hard drive. You don't have to install all the kits, but they all have a character of their own so we recommend at least trying them all!
DR-008 or B.F.D... how do I choose?
Both! In all seriousness, DR-008 and B.F.D. are quite complementary products:- B.F.D. is an easy to use and ultra high quality Acoustic Drum Library with a surprisingly powerful Virtual Instrument front-end; DR-008 is a programmable and highly flexible Drum Sampler and Drum Synthesizer.
Will DR-008 import B.F.D. content?
At present, no:- aside from anything else, the B.F.D. soundsets are too large for the current version of DR-008 to handle - B.F.D. has disk-streaming sample playback, DR-008 does not.
Will B.F.D. eventually replace DR-008, or vice versa?
Absolutely not - they'll continue to evolve in parallel.
Can I program my own patterns and fills for use in B.F.D.?
Yes, absolutely :- B.F.D.'s MIDI player supports standard MIDI files, as exported by every sequencer known to man. You can build entire custom B.F.D. style sets and fills in your sequencer - see the manual for more info.
Can I use my own samples in B.F.D.?
No. B.F.D.'s samples were recorded with a carefully set-up multi channel process, and it would not be possible to recreate the mic positioning with "standard" samples. B.F.D. is NOT a "drum sampler", it's very much a sound library instrument.
How many different kits and kit pieces are there?
There are 7 full kits and an assortment of spare kit pieces. In total, you have 9 kicks, 15 snares, 6 hihats, 7 sets of toms, and 15 cyms to choose from.
Are further kits planned?
You bet - we plan to start recording new drum kits late 2003 or early 2004. These will be available as double DVD expansion packs sold separately.
